Beck Engineering has been the engineering partner of Breivoll Inspection Technologies AS in their development of the Breivoll Pipe Scanner 2 (PS2), a conduit vehicle for inside inspection of water pipes.
Building all mechanical hardware for the unit, including the scanner itself, umbilical and winch has been the most challenging engineering project to date for Beck Engineering. We have also designed and built the top-side inspection vehicle, based on a standard Mercedes van.

PS2 scans the pipe walls utilising acoustic resonance. The transducer units are positioned in eight octagon units, each holding eight transducers. Needless to say, the transducers must be protected from scratches and damage due to rough handling against the iron pipe walls. To allow for safe operation the unit's buoyancy also acts as shielding.

To obtain valid signals, it is adamant the unit stays in the centre of the water pipe. A flexible centre-mechanism in front and aft of the unit consisting of five wheel-sets secures perfect centre operation.

Results are presented graphically to clients via an innovative information systems developed especially for Breivoll Inspeciton Technologies. The measurements display defects or corrosion within the water pipe, indicate inside and outside pitting and presents a topographic map of the inside pipe walls. Joints, valves and bends are also shown.

Developing the Breivoll PS 2 has taken several years, involving the efforts of well renowned companies such as Det Norske Veritas, Data Respons and Jupiter System Partner AS. Beck Engineering's workshop/mechanical laboratory has been the main coordinating test site for all subcontractors in the Breivoll project.

Key Projects

DNV Acoustic Pig Project

Beck Engineering AS has participated closely in the joint development project of Det Norske Veritas (DNV) and Gassco to develop a new acoustic inspection method, which allows the internal and external status of gas pipelines to be accurately characterised. This new technology allows measurements to be made without reducing the gas flow.

SeaBed ROV-tool and Deepwater Basket

Beck Engineering AS has designed and built a complex ROV-tool and deepwater basket system for SeaBed Geophysical, a subsidiary of SeaBird Exploration. SeaBed enjoyed great commercial success with their system. The seismic sensor unit CASE Abyss was also nominated for best design 2008 by Norwegian Design Council.
